Nerikomi Intensive with Eiko Maeda

In this 5-day workshop, Eiko Maeda will lead students into nerikomi handbuilding technique.

Participants will first learn to create some basic patterns, as well as how to properly handle and color the clay. They will also learn several slab building techniques as they vary depending on the patterns. After learning how to make different patterns, participants will move on to building a shape out of a patterned sheet using plaster molds. We will start from shallow objects, and gradually move onto shapes with more depth. We will use simple plaster molds that we have available; however, participants are welcomed to bring their own plaster molds to try to shape their pieces in the last few days of the workshop. We will also go over bisque firing and finishing techniques.

The goal at the end of the workshop is for participants to build on the techniques learned and design their own pattens. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to develop new and unique directions in their work.
